Winter flounder, Psuedopleuronectes Americanus, is about as popular with east coast recreational anglers as pollock, though slightly less so. Winter flounder is a flatfish that is found in the NW Atlantic from Georgia to Labrador. Winter flounder live to 15-20 years old. Since the 80's, catch and release of winter flounder has increased, though Winter flounder make excellent eating. Maine flounder are caught in the spring and fall. Flounder are caught by baitfishing. Flounder are flatfish that weigh 1-2 lbs and average between 1-1.5 feet long. Winter flounder are caught feeding in shallow water in the spring and fall. Flounder can not tollerate the heat and cold of summer and winter, and migrate to deeper water durring these times. Flounder are often found near clam-beds, and on sandy and muddy bottoms. At low tide, flounder move from extreme shallows to deeper water. Chumming for flounder is effective at drawing them to your boat/area. A bag of broken clams or catfood bounced on the bottom every now and then will attract fish. Clam necks, bits of fish, and worms are the baits used to catch flounder. The hooks used to catch flounder have long shanks with a narrow hook bend. This allows a small mouthed flounder to take the bait. Usually, a weighted two hook rig is used to catch flounder. Bouncing the rig on the bottom is the only technique necessary to entice a flounder to bite. Maine's winter flounder limit is eight fish, each 12 inches or more in length. Fresh flounder is deliciouse cooked almost any way. |
