Smallmouthed Bass Smallmouth Bass are less challenging to catch than trout and salmon, and offer more of a resistance to being reeled in. A day spent bass fishing, even for a novice, could mean catching above twenty fish, and can be fun for the whole family. Maine is known for excellent Smallmouth bass fishing. Smallmouth bass are found in the warmer sections of rivers and around the shorelines of most maine lakes and ponds. Big Smallmouth bass can be cought near dropoffs, weedbeds and underwater structure, such as rocks and trees. Bass eat crayfish, hellgraminths, baitfish, worms, and aquatic insects. Hungry Smallmouthed bass will take immitations of crayfish, minnows, and frogs, but all day action can also be had using flies, such as bass bugs, poppers, and wooly buggers. Once a smallmouth bass is located, having the right fly can mean the difference between battling a trophy copperback or not.
