Pollock may be substituted for cod or haddock in most recipes. Pollock are considered easy to catch. Pollock are found along Maines coastline by the shore where there is a rocky bottom. For best taste, put your dead catch on ice right away. Pollock have a silver belly with grey/yellow sides, a white lateral stripe, and a dark olive/brown green back. Harbor pollock are schools of small pollock that are in shallow water newar shore. Pollock are caught year-round in Maine. They prefer 50-70 degree water, but can survive water near 32 degrees. Harbor pollock are found over rocky bottom and rock outcroppings. Large pollock are caught offshore, and are fished for from charter boats. Yearling pollock eat crustaceans. Pollock feed durring the day. Large pollock eat small cod, haddock, herring, shrimp, and hake. Offshore angling for pollock is done using a cod jig. Commonly, a diamond jig is tied on below a red teaser. This immitates a baitfish chasing food. Angling for pollock from shore is done with small fish immitations, Kastmasters, streamers, and Mackeral rigs. Both deep water pollock and harbor pollock are caught on cut bait and clams. The limit for pollock under 19" is 6 fish per day. |
